Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex of interrelated metabolic disorders, including abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and disorders of carbohydrate metabolism. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is steadily increasing worldwide due to lifestyle changes, the rising prevalence of obesity, and population aging. Of particular importance is the high comorbidity of metabolic syndrome with cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, and other pathologies. This article examines current understanding of the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome, its relationship with comorbid conditions, and the key areas of prevention and treatment.
