Relevance. Pterygium has always been a subject of close attention among ophthalmologists in countries with hot climates. Purpose of study. Optical coherence tomography and crystallographic assessment of the cornea in pterygium before and after surgery. Material and methods. The study included 35 eyes (26 patients) with pterygium of stage II and IV. All patients were operated on using a xenograft without suture fixation. OCT results were compared with tear crystallography before and after surgery. Results. The use of xenograft in the surgery of primary and recurrent pterygium of stage III–IV allowed prevention of relapse. In patients with stage II pterygium development, despite some thickening of the central part of the cornea, the crystallographic pattern did not differ from normal. Conclusions. Optical coherence tomography and tear crystallography allow objective assessment of the cornea before and after surgery.
