Relevance. Pterygium is a frequently encountered pathology in our region. An in-depth investigation is relevant from the standpoint of understanding the pathogenesis of pterygium. Purpose of the study. Optical coherence assessment of the effectiveness of xenotransplantation in the surgical treatment of pterygium. Materials and methods. The study included 37 patients with grade III and grade V pterygium. All patients underwent surgery using a xenotransplant. Optical coherence tomography of the cornea was performed in all patients before and after surgery. Results. Optical coherence tomography demonstrated that in all patients with grade III pterygium prior to surgery, the peripheral corneal thickness averaged from 645 μm to 725 μm. In patients with grade IV and grade V pterygium, the peripheral corneal thickness was 730 μm. The central corneal thickness averaged 768 μm. In the postoperative period, in all cases the peripheral thickness was 534 μm, and the central thickness was 564 μm. Conclusion. Optical coherence tomography allows an objective assessment of the corneal condition in the preoperative and postoperative periods.
