Building ceramics of the ancient settlement of akchakhan-kala

Annotatsiya

Akсhakhankala settlement is located in the Beruni district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. Duringthe years of archaeological research, a large amount of ceramic material has been collected, datingback to the 3rd century BC. – 5th century A.D. The collection contains a set of tiles that is attributableto a category of construction ceramics.The construction ceramics of the site of Akсhakhankala includes water pipes and ceramic tiles. The useof ceramic vessel fragments in construction has also been recorded. Ceramic tiles and building ceramicsof Ancient Khorezm remained little covered in science. In this work the author makes an attempt tostudy ceramic tiles from Akсhahankala settlement and introduce this category of ceramic products intoscientific turnover. As a result of the study of ceramic tiles, it was found that these building materialswere made by craftsmen or artisans who possessed certain skills and special devices. Basically, ceramictiles were used in laying the drainage system of the settlement.The outcomes of the research allow assuming that in Ancient Khorezm ceramic building materialswere used to solve such problems as protection of constructions from atmospheric precipitations,improvement of settlements and increase of durability of mud-brick structures
