Two years ago, the Japanese collector Shinji Hirano published a new type of silver coin, found alongwith another similar specimen in the Samarkand region. We managed to obtain a photograph of thelatter. The portrait on the obverse of these two coins is close in format and iconography to the imageof the ruler on the coins of the third series in Samarkand archer coinage (the last quarter of the 3rd tothe beginning of the 4th century CE). Only 4 of the 7 characters in the reverse circular legend can beidentified on the two known specimens, but their shapes agree with the Sogdian paleography of thelate 3rd- early 4th centuries AD, with one form known only in the legend on the same third series ofcoins of the Samarkand archer. Finally, the metal and weight of the new coins also correspond to thesame third series in the Samarkand coinage. Considering all the parallels and the place of discovery,we can assume that these two coins represent a short-term coinage of the end of the 3rd - beginningof the 4th century CE, that can tentatively be attributed to Samarkand Soghd. Meanwhile, the tamghaoccupying the reverse field on our two specimens has the same shape as the tamgha, which from thelate 4th or the beginning of the 5th century was placed on the «early Chach coins».
