In this article, as a result of referring to the painted ossuary from Tok-kala with a scene of mourning forthe dead, dating back to the early Middle Ages, the following new interpretation of its plot is offered. Theanalysis of the hairstyles and costumes of the characters on the Tok-kala ossuary suggests that the depictedfigures belonged to the Turkic ethnic stratum of the early Middle Ages. The study of historiographical materialhas shown that the Tok-Kala ossuary has been described by Soviet art historians in a fragmentary manner.Some unsubstantiated conclusions are revealed here regarding the gender identity of the characters, wherefigures with long hairstyles and braids are interpreted as women. It is known that Turkic men of the TurkicKaganate times wore one or more long braids. This circumstance, which radically contradicts the previousinterpretations, allows a new interpretation of the gender identity of the depicted figures. A comparison ofthe plot and a Zoroastrian burial rite allows assuming that the three figures sitting on the ground next to thedeceased, with their legs tucked under them, are the nasassalars, representatives of a specific class of theZoroastrian community, who usually managed the ritual of preparing the body of the deceased for burial.Ordinary people and relatives were forbidden to touch the deceased; they could only look at the deceased froma distance, which is apparently reflected in this part of the scene.
