Annotatsiya

In the developed world, archaeologists reconstruct past life through the preserved remains of human activitiesthat have survived in various forms. This process uses an interdisciplinary approach based on the experienceof various specialists including botanists, geologists, ecologists, and zoologists. While studying the subsistencesystem of ancient populations, knowledge of the environment, such as climate, animal distribution, ancient andmodem flora, and soils, becomes essential. Plant remains included wild and cultivated species extracted byflotation methods and actual seeds found on dry monuments or in charred form. Stable carbon isotopes of skeletalcollagen in the bones of ancient humans provide essential information about nutrition in antiquity. Thus, biofactsrepresenting plant remains help address anthropological questions about the role of agricultural products andplants in general in early human communities. During the Soviet and the Independence periods, researchers reliedmore on written, ethnographic, and archaeological sources to reconstruct the history of agriculture in Central Asia. The lack of laboratories with contemporary equipment and the fact that the latest advances in natural sciences,as in the West and the United States, were hardly applied to archaeology resulted in ignoring the biofacts as akey source of knowledge to reconstruct Central Asia‘s agricultural past. So far, all archaeobotanical studies havebeen conducted in collaboration with foreign researchers, as local archaeobotanical specialists have not yet beentrained in Central Asia. The article offers a brief overview of archaeobotanical research conducted in Central Asiaand some relevant challenges.
