The article examines one of the main aspects of cultural genesis, namely the relationship between the culturesof sedentary farmers and pastoralists of the Eurasian steppes based on the artifacts from the lower Syr Darya, the territory of which was one of the contact zones in Eurasia. The publication focuses on the Chirikrabatarchaeological culture, which was formed in the southwestern part of the ancient Syr Darya delta no laterthan the turn of the 4th-5th centuries BC. The culture emerged in this territory, of course, on a local basis, when the nomadic Sakas, who inhabited the lower reaches of the Syr Darya in the second third of the 1stmillennium BC, switched to an irrigation-based sedentary arable and pastoral farming. The range of theChirikrabat archaeological culture encompasses ancient settlements and hill forts, which are briefly describedin the article. Comparative analysis of all these sites helped to identify the site-specific features and made itpossible to objectively determine the hierarchy within the entire array of these sites, which can be traced evenat the highest taxonometric level. The analysis of the whole corpus of artifacts known at present gives groundsto assume that in the second half of the 1st millennium BC, all the prerequisites existed in the lower reaches ofthe Syr Darya to form a single interconnected centralized irrigation-based economic system with a developedhandicraft production.
