The location of sites in relation to water sources in the Fergana Valley in the early medieval period has notbeen studied. In the framework of his doctoral thesis, the author for the first time carried out an inventory andsystematization of sites of this period. During the mapping process, more than 250 sites of early medievalFergana were identified. Those comprised 217 archaeological sites, 22 locations of ancient Turkic inscriptions, and about 20 ossuary and hum burials, as well as two treasures of coins. Given the presence of water sources, each group of sites was merged into micro-oases or oases, the latter, in turn, into irrigation areas. As a result, thefollowing hierarchical zoning system was created: water source » micro-oasis, oasis » irrigation area. Foreach oasis or irrigation area, we have conditionally identified the so-called pivotal sites that probably playedthe role of an administrative, craft, or cultural center of an oasis or several oases (usually 2-3). As a result, wehave allocated 14 irrigation districts in the Fergana Valley. The identified irrigation areas almost completelycoincide with the territory that was once developed in earlier periods. They are located in groups based on thewater resources of rivers and springs (sai). Thus, the settlement pattern is similar to the location of sites of theChust and Eilatan cultures.
