Annotatsiya

The article describes new fragments of paintings from the Buddhist complex Fayaztepa, located in the ancientsettlement of Old Termez. One fragment partially preserved the image of a Buddhist architectural object. It is astupa painted on a blue background. The depiction of cult architectures in wall paintings is a rare, one could sayunique phenomenon in the artistic culture of Northern Tokharistan in the first centuries AD. Painted in colour anddetail, they contain much more information than images such as graffiti, simply scrawled on the walls. Despitethe fact that the surviving fragments are small in size, it is possible to describe in detail the decorations of antiqueBuddhist stupas and the composition as a whole. The other two fragments represent a painting in relief medallion, which is the first time it is found in the architectural decoration of Bactria-Toharistan. The painting depicts a scenewith the donors. The design of the painting in the medallion speaks of the originality of artistic methods and, perhaps, of the bold experiments of Bactrian painters. The methods used in the creation of clay-ganche sculpturewere used in this process.
