This article provides information on the pictographic signs and inscriptions found on ceramics at thenewly discovered Bronze Age site of Kattabulak, located on the slopes of the Kugitang Piedmonts.A total of 42 signs are identified, with 10 of them being combined. The pictographic symbols vary inshape and were inscribed onto pottery using a sharp tool before firing. These signs are compared withthose recorded at sites such as Sapallitepe, Djarkutan, Tilla Bulak, and Dashli. The study of Bactrianinscriptions from the Bronze Age leads the authors to conclude that these inscriptions represent anearly Bactrian-Margian writing system. The authors also note that Kattabulak’s pictography sharescultural unity with the pictographies of Gonur and Togolok in ancient Margiana, as well as withthose of Sapallitepe, Zharkutan, Tilla Bulak, and Dashli in ancient Bactria, all of which fall under thegeneral designation «Pictography of the Oxus Civilization».
