Annotatsiya

This article summarizes the materials of archaeological research and ethnographic sources on one of the mostfamous but underexplored in the literature school of Rishtan ceramic production. Based on archaeologicalfinds from the upper horizons of Ark and Shahristan of Bukhara, cultural layers around the ShaykhantaurMausoleum in Tashkent, as well as numerous samples of Rishtan and Rishtanoid dishes from museumcollections of Uzbekistan, the origins of the appearance, characteristic features and reasons for its wide andrapid spread in the ceramic markets of Central Asia during the second half of the 19th century are examined.According to the results of our research, both in terms of technical manufacturing characteristics and artisticstyle indicators, the newly emerged school of Rishtan products in color scheme was completely different fromthe old, traditional “kadyma”. This difference was primarily seen in the use of a solid turquoise or white glazethat thoroughly covered both the interior and exterior surfaces of the items, including the base. Cobalt andmanganese ornamentation was applied to the exterior surface of bowls, leaving the interior unadorned. Thedishes had a squat shape, convenient for eating thick forms of food (plov) by hand. But a common characteristicwas the mandatory affixing of schematic pseudo-Chinese stamps on pallets. Based on the presented materials, the emergence rapid and widespread distribution of the products of the Rishtan school of masters can be seenas an innovative adoption of forms and colors, the style of expensive Chinese porcelain particularly celadonswhich was believed to possess protective powers, even in fragmentary form, in Bukhara. Thanks to the highassessments of experts and enthusiasts samples of Rishtan and Rishtanoid ceramic products from other citiesof the Fergana Valley were almost always included in the exhibits of the Turkestan department at All-Russianand International exhibitions, repeatedly awarded with prizes and medals, including at the World Exhibitionin Paris in 1900.
