Annotatsiya

The global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to spread around the world. There have been approximately 590 million confirmed cases and 6.44 million deaths to date. Intensive work is underway to combat this disease by suppressing viral transmission, understanding its pathogenesis, developing vaccine prophylaxis, developing a strategy and identifying effective therapeutic targets. People with previously diagnosed diabetes have a more severe course of Covid-19 and a poor prognosis against the background of coronavirus infection. In addition, a high incidence of diabetes, as well as newly reported cases of diabetes mellitus, have been observed in patients after being diagnosed with COVID-19. COVID-19 may increase the risk of hyperglycemia and other complications in patients with and without previously diagnosed diabetes. It is also known that recovering patients with COVID-19 have a higher risk of developing newly diagnosed diabetes or its complications. The purpose of this review is to summarize what is currently known about the epidemiology and mechanisms of the bidirectional association between COVID-19 and diabetes.
