On the theory of parametric amplification of short laser pulses in nonlinear photonic crystals

The process of parametric amplification of short (femtosecond) laser pulses in crystals with a regular domain structure is theoretically studied. The main attention is paid to the formation of a signal pulse under the influence of the medium dispersion and cubic nonlinearity of the Kerr type. It is shown that an insignificant change in the size of domains from their exact value, which is determined by the coherent length, can significantly increase the efficiency of the signal wave. This is due to the fact that phase shifts caused by the effects of third-order nonlinearity and dispersion of the medium (as a rule, they both only affect the generalized phases of nonlinear interaction of waves), can be partially compensated by the influence of the "excess" wavenumber of the nonlinear grating. On the basis of results obtained, the optimal values of the domain size are analyzed at which maximum efficiency of signal wave generation is observed under conditions of self action and nonstationarity.
