This article analyzes the functioning of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan between 2001 and 2021 and its collapse amid the weakness of the political system. It examines the transfer of power to the Taliban in 2021, the problem of political legitimacy in Afghanistan, and the internal and external factors that contributed to the government’s defeat.
