This article provides a systematic analysis of the functional and semantic characteristics of structural-pragmatic devices that express the subject’s attitude toward the dictum in both formal and informal communication. The study is conducted within a communicative-pragmatic framework and speech act theory and aims to reveal the mechanisms through which subjective stance is expressed in formal discourse. The article offers a detailed examination of the pragmatic potential of modal verbs and modality-expressing devices, explanatory clauses and parenthetical insertions, impersonal constructions, complex sentences, as well as emphatic structures. The analysis demonstrates how epistemic and deontic modality is employed to convey relations of certainty, probability, obligation, and evaluation in mitigated or indirect forms. In addition, the examples are pragmatically interpreted on the basis of Grice’s Cooperative Principle, politeness theory, and relevance theory. The findings indicate that these structural and stylistic devices play a significant role in maintaining social appropriateness in communication, conveying subjective evaluation with caution, and enhancing overall communicative effectiveness. Authentic samples of real communication in English and Uzbek are used as empirical material. In particular, the English data are drawn from Bill Gates’s interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” (2023), while the Uzbek data are based on a conversation featuring Alisher Isayev within the “MFactor” project. The results contribute to the comparative study of the structural and pragmatic features of formal discourse and are of considerable scholarly value for linguopragmatic research.
