The article examines the genre-specific features of Spanish newspaper discourse from a pragmatic perspective – as a set of communicative “rules of the game” that regulate relations between the newsroom (addresser), sources, and the reader (addressee). The point of departure is an understanding of the news text as a socio-institutional practice in which the effect of objectivity is produced not by “neutral language,” but by systematic discursive procedures of selecting facts, arranging emphases, and marking responsibility for information (van Dijk, 2009). The study draws on openly accessible normative and research sources to describe the key pragmatic mechanisms of genres – primarily the news report, report/chronicle, and publicistic opinion writing: (1) attribution and polyphony (whose position is voiced), (2) evidentiality (what type of source/access to knowledge is specified), (3) attenuation (softening categorical statements), and (4) rules governing headlines and the “packaging” of facts. A qualitative analytical model is proposed that does not rely on corpus procedures: genre is interpreted as a pragmatic contract, while linguistic markers are treated as tools for managing trust, distance, and evaluation.
