This article analyzes sociolinguistic aspects of business-term usage in print media, drawing on English and Uzbek data. Business lexis is treated not only as a tool for naming economic realities but also as a resource of social indexicality: a marker of professional competence, “embeddedness” in global markets, institutional trust, and modernization discourse. The theoretical framework relies on language-contact linguistics and media sociolinguistics, where borrowing is interpreted as an outcome of prestige asymmetries and functional needs of communicative domains (Alvanoudi, 2017). Methodologically, the study is based on qualitative analysis of openly accessible normative and scholarly sources on terminology, as well as illustrative close reading of print-press materials available through online archives (an Uzbek newspaper and English-language business journalism). Corpus procedures and quantitative frequency analysis are deliberately not used. The results indicate that (1) in the Uzbek press, business terms often enter through a “two-step” borrowing route (English → a Russian/international layer → Uzbek), (2) a high share of abbreviations and graphically non-adapted forms (IPO, B2B, B2G) co-occurs with morphological integration via Uzbek word-formation patterns, and (3) terminological choice depends on audience design and genre, thereby constructing a boundary between “elite” and “mass” reading. Implications for language policy, terminological standardization, and media literacy are discussed.
