This article provides a comparative analysis of the images of heroes in ancient and medieval literature, using Achilles, the central character of Homer’s Iliad, and Sir Lancelot, one of the key Knights of the Round Table, as examples. The study aims to identify how the historical, social, and cultural characteristics of the respective eras shaped the formation of heroic ideals, value orientations, and internal contradictions of these characters. Particular attention is paid to exploring the inner nature of heroes, their personal motives, and their attitudes toward duty, glory, love, and honor. This article examines how the ancient understanding of heroism – based on the ideas of arete, valor, and the pursuit of immortal glory – contrasts with the medieval chivalric ideal, which included elements of service, courtly love, loyalty, and spiritual and moral self-improvement. The article also highlights the differences in the behavioral patterns of Achilles and Lancelot, as well as the internal conflicts that shape their characters: the fierce individuality and tragic fate of the ancient hero are contrasted with the complex system of moral dilemmas and emotional ambivalence of the knight, living between duty and passion. Thus, the study demonstrates the evolution of ideas about the hero and heroism from antiquity to the Middle Ages, revealing how changing worldviews and social structures led to the emergence of new artistic types and ethical models.
