The contextual approach of Francis Richard in the analysis of Shaybanid period manuscript art

This article examines the research methodology employed by French scholar Francis Richard in studying the manuscript book art of Central Asia during the Shaybanid dynasty (1500–1599). Using the monograph Le Siècle des Shibanides, co-authored with Lola Dodkhudoeva, as a case study, it analyzes Richard’s approach to interpreting calligraphy and miniatures as reflections of political and cultural symbolism. His contextual method combines codicology, art history, and comparative literary analysis. Special focus is placed on his analysis of manuscript features such as colophons, dedications, artists’ signatures, and stylistic elements to reveal links between manuscript production and political patronage during the Shaybanid era. Richard’s work emphasizes a holistic study of manuscripts, considering not only their aesthetic value but also their historical context and ideological function. His approach offers a fresh perspective on 16th-century Central Asian book culture. The article highlights the theoretical and practical importance of Richard’s contextual methodology for comparative literature and the study of Eastern manuscript arts.
