Annotatsiya

This article explores the concept as a central unit of cognitive linguistics, thoroughly examining its structure, functions, and typology. The concept is defined as a mental structure reflecting the interplay of language, thought, and culture, playing a pivotal role in knowledge organization, information categorization, and communication processes. The article analyzes the concept’s components, including its core, periphery, and figurative elements, alongside its functions: categorization, orientation, communication, and cultural-identification roles. The typology of concepts—universal, national, and individual—is discussed through the existential notions of “life” and “death.” Special focus is given to the expression of concepts in literary texts, highlighting distinctions between Karakalpak and English literature. In Karakalpak tradition, “life” is associated with harmony with nature, collectivism, moral values, and familial duty, while English literature emphasizes existential quests, internal conflicts, and resistance to chaos. These differences stem from cultural contexts and authors’ worldviews. Concepts in literary texts are expressed through images, metaphors, and symbols, and their semantic field plays an important role in shaping the emotional and aesthetic layer of the text. In addition, concepts deepen the meaning of the text, evoke associative thinking in the reader, and help in understanding the national mentality.
