It is a fact that the translation of culture-specific concepts (CSCs), and allusions in particular, represents one of the most complex and demanding aspects of the translation process. This complexity is held to arise primarily from the fact that allusions are often culturally saturated, carrying implicit meanings, historical references, or literary associations that are deeply embedded within the source language (SL) and its corresponding cultural context. It is for sure these embedded references may not only lack direct equivalents in the target language (TL), but may also be entirely unfamiliar or unrecognizable to the target audience. As such, translators are often confronted with the dual challenge of maintaining both the semantic integrity and the cultural resonance of the original text. To address this challenge, they must apply carefully selected translation procedures and strategies – ranging from direct transfer and adaptation to omission or explanatory paraphrasing – depending on the nature and function of the allusion. The present study is to investigate the intersection of these strategies and to evaluate their relative effectiveness in rendering CSCs and allusions across diverse linguistic and cultural boundaries, with the ultimate goal of enhancing intercultural communication and preserving the richness of the source material.
