This article examines the discursive function of war metaphors in shaping environmental discourse in contemporary English-language media. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Framing Theory, it explores how ecological challenges are represented through militarized language to convey urgency, conflict, and moral struggle. The author categorizes war metaphors by topical domains – such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, activism, and natural disasters – and analyzes their ideological roles in constructing narratives, assigning blame, and legitimizing authority. Media sources like The Guardian and The Conversation are shown to use war metaphors strategically to evoke emotional engagement and promote collective action. However, the article also warns of the potential risks of overusing such metaphors, including fear, polarization, and the narrowing of policy responses. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the need for more reflective and inclusive metaphorical strategies in climate communication to balance rhetorical impact with ethical responsibility. The article contributes to cognitive linguistics, media studies, and environmental discourse analysis.
