Discourse competence is important in English language teaching (ELT) because it is the foundation for effective communication and language learning. It includes the ability to construct coherent and consistent speech, understand text features, apply composition strategies, and have knowledge of academic writing. Developing discourse competence will help you master academic writing, improve your communication skills, and understand language structures in context. The ability to manage discourse in the classroom is also important for language teachers because it affects the engagement and learning process of language learners. In general, discourse competence is a key component of English language teaching that contributes to effective communication, language learning, and teaching. In addition, when teaching discourse competence, it is necessary to pay attention to coherence and sequencing, as well as the teaching of connectives and linking words. Students’ ignorance of such important areas hinders their full comprehension of text and speech.
