Foreign language anxiety (FLA) remains a major barrier to meaningful participation in English for Specific Purposes classes, especially for first-year engineering students who are still adapting to university-level communication demands. This study examines the level, main sources and pedagogical implications of FLA among engineering students at Kokand State University through a mixed-methods design that combines FLCAS questionnaire data and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that communication apprehension is the dominant component of anxiety, while limited speaking practice, fear of peerjudgment, technical vocabulary pressure and teacher-centered instruction intensify students’ stress in ESP classrooms.
