This article is devoted to a comparative study of the neutralization of the category of gender within the nominal morphology of English and Russian. It examines the functioning of the gender category as one of the fundamental components of the grammatical system of the noun, identifies the conditions under which gender oppositions lose their distinctive function, and analyzes the mechanisms of their neutralization in languages belonging to different typological systems.
