This article examines the representation of social class changes in Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. The study focuses on poverty, the workhouse system, social aspiration and the idea of gentlemanliness in Victorian England. The analysis shows that Oliver Twist presents class mainly as an external pressure: hunger, orphanhood, parish control and criminal exploitation shape the child’s life before he is able to make any real choice. In Great Expectations, class becomes a more inward and psychological problem. The article also places Dickens’s novels beside works by Balzac, Hugo, Gaskell, Zola, Steinbeck and selected Asian writers such as Anand, Premchand and Lu Xun.
