This article examines the translation methods and strategies employed in film subtitling. The study reviews key theoretical approaches in translation studies, drawing in particular on the works of J. Catford, J.-P. Vinay and J. Darbelnet, as well as on subtitling models proposed by leading scholars in audiovisual translation, such as J. Díaz Cintas and A. Remael. For the empirical analysis, the English subtitles of the drama film Vatan (2006), directed by Zulfiqor Musoqov, were selected as the object of research. The original dialogues and their subtitle translations are analyzed comparatively in order to identify the use of reduction, omission, lexical and semantic transformations, as well as cultural adaptation in subtitling. The findings demonstrate that the temporal and spatial constraints inherent in subtitling have a direct impact on translators’ decisions and, in certain cases, create the need to balance linguistic accuracy with cultural appropriateness. The results of the study are of both theoretical and practical significance for research and practice in audiovisual translation.
