Idioms represent a highly culture-bound and cognitively complex component of language, posing significant challenges for translators. This article explores the cognitive mechanisms that underlie the translation of idiomatic expressions from English into Russian. Drawing on insights from cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphor theory, and translation studies, the paper examines how idioms are processed, interpreted, and transferred across languages with different cultural and conceptual systems. Particular attention is paid to metaphorical mappings, mental imagery, cultural scripts, and pragmatic functions. The analysis identifies common translation strategies—conceptual equivalence, paraphrasing, substitution, explicitation, and compensation—and illustrates how translators navigate conceptual mismatches between English and Russian. The study concludes that effective idiom translation requires not only linguistic proficiency but also deep cultural and conceptual awareness, demonstrating the centrality of cognitive processes in cross-linguistic meaning construction.
