Phraseological units with zoonymic components are stable expressions that include animal names (zoonyms). They possess a figurative, holistic meaning that differs from the literal meaning of their individual components and reflect the cultural and historical characteristics of a people through animal imagery. Zoonymic phraseological units include references to domestic animals such as dogs, cats, sheep, horses, bulls, cows, goats, camels, and chickens; wild animals such as foxes, rabbits, tigers, bears, wolves, lions, and wild boars; reptiles such as snakes and turtles; rodents such as mice; birds; aquatic animals; and insects. Zoonymic components function phraseologically in accordance with the relationship between the overall meaning of a phraseological unit and the meanings of its constituent words. Even today, many areas of human activity—particularly agriculture, industry, sports, and science—remain closely connected with animals. This relationship between humans and the animal world has also influenced language, giving rise to a group of expressions with zoonymic components in the lexical system of a language. Phraseological units with zoonymic components are characterized by an anthropocentric orientation: numerous human traits are metaphorically represented through animal imagery. Such units enhance the expressiveness of speech and serve as an important means of character portrayal. This article focuses on the representation of human characteristics through animal-based expressions.
