This paper explores the phenomenon of cognitive-linguistic manipulation in Agatha Christie’s detective fiction, focusing on the ways in which the author guides and misdirects the reader’s understanding through linguistic choices. Cognitive-linguistic manipulation refers to strategies implemented by a text’s creator to influence readers’ mental models, perceptions, and judgments during the process of reading. This study utilizes a cognitive stylistics approach alongside narrative analysis to uncover how Christie manipulates language, framing, and character dialogue to produce uncertainty, suspicion, and eventual resolution. Our results demonstrate that linguistic mechanisms, such as ambiguous expressions, indirect references, framing, semantic delays, and modal verbs, contribute significantly to sustaining the mystery and retaining the reader’s engagement until the final revelation of the culprit.
