This scientific article analyzes the debate between Mahmudkhoja Behbudiy, a prominent representative of the Jadid enlightenment movement, and the Tatar publicist Rauf Muzaffarzoda regarding the national language and spelling. They considered the language of the press as the language of the nation and its general classroom, fighting for the purity of the Uzbek literary language even during the difficult times when tsarist oppressive policies were at their peak. In particular, M. Behbudiy's valuable thoughts on the national language gave a great impetus to the formation of the language and style of publications of that time.
