The Historiography of Religious Symbols in the Archaeological Finds of Northern Bactria

This article analyzes the religious concepts associated with Zoroastrianism, the symbols associated with creation, and the myths of the Yetilik. Northern Bactria has been a crossroads of Central Asian cultures and civilizations since ancient times. Geographically, this region includes the Surkhandarya Valley in southern Uzbekistan, northern Afghanistan, and southern Tajikistan. The article examines the important burial symbols of the region. In the 3rd–2nd millennia BC, a major Bronze Age civilization emerged in this region. It is known as the Oxus civilization. The article analyzes the burial traditions of the northern regions of the Oxus civilization. During this period, religious beliefs played an important role in the life of society, and rich traces of these beliefs have been preserved in archaeological finds. The purpose of this article is to study, from a historiographical perspective, the burial customs and religious symbols that emerged during the Bronze Age of Northern Bactria, to reveal their meaning, and to analyze the research conducted in this regard. In general terms, the Bronze Age of Northern Bactria was characterized by the widespread use of bronze, the formation of urban culture, and the development of irrigated agriculture and crafts. The Bronze Age culture in the territory of Northern Bactria was reflected in the monuments of Sopollitepa, Jarkutan, Dashli, and others. Among them, the Jarkutan monument is known as the largest settlement. In the culture of this period, a certain degree of centralized religious ritual, social stratification, large temples, and objects with religious symbols can be observed.
