This article examines the history of the formation and development of linguistic competence at a university in the context of the requirements of the time. In modern society, specialists with a high level of linguistic competence are especially in demand. Analyzing the features of the activities of specialists, the current state of language training of applicants, identifying the possible reasons for their low linguistic competence and the place of linguistic disciplines in the system of training specialists, the author outlines ways to improve the speech skills of students.
