This article presents the historical development of the world translation school, as well as an overview of the main trends in modern translation studies, undertaken on the basis of studying the most significant works created in various fields of translation science. The main feature of translation studies today is its focus on practice, on the study of the patterns of translation activity, which makes it possible to comprehend both the characteristics of various types of translation and the essence of translation as a type of human activity.
