Annotatsiya

This article examines India’s evolving engagement with the Central Asian region, tracing its historical, political, economic, and strategic dimensions. The study begins by highlighting the deep-rooted cultural and civilizational linkages between India and Central Asia dating back to the Silk Road era and the Indo-Scythian interactions. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, India was among the first to establish diplomatic relations with the newly independent Central Asian republics. Since then, New Delhi’s policy toward the region has focused on fostering security cooperation, economic connectivity, and cultural diplomacy. The paper analyzes India’s growing role as a regional stakeholder through initiatives such as the International North– South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline, and its active participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). India’s strategic interests are further shaped by its need for energy security, counterterrorism cooperation, and its aspiration to balance Chinese and Pakistani influence in Eurasia. The 2022 India–Central Asia Summit marked a milestone in institutionalizing these ties, promoting dialogue on infrastructure, trade, and regional stability. Overall, the paper argues that India’s engagement with Central Asia reflects its broader ambition to project power across Eurasia through a balanced combination of economic pragmatism, cultural soft power, and strategic diplomacy.
