This article provides an in-depth analysis of the legal essence and theoretical foundations of the institution of legalization of foreign official documents. The study explores the historical origins of the term "legalization," its formation in international legal practice, and the peculiarities of its application in the legal systems of various countries. The author substantiates the legal significance of the legalization institution in international law, the procedural differences between consular legalization and the apostille system, and their international recognition. Particular attention is given to the legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, its accession to the Hague Convention, and the evolutionary changes in national regulatory legal acts. The article also highlights the relevance of the legalization institution in the international recognition of documents' legal validity, its progressive development, and practical application. The article concludes with an author's definition of the concept of legalization based on scientific and theoretical analysis.
