The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the historical origins and evolution of the institution of amnesty. Research findings indicate that the institution of amnesty has ancient roots, appearing in the Laws of Hammurabi, Ancient Egyptian practices, the Roman legal system, and Eastern traditions, including the "Avesta." The article outlines the stages of amnesty’s development in the medieval and modern eras, exploring its legal foundations and practical applications. It also examines trends in the institution of amnesty during the years of independence in the Republic of Uzbekistan, detailing its legal framework. The study traces the historical phases of amnesty’s evolution, highlighting its distinctive characteristics in each period. Notably, while amnesty in ancient times largely represented the absolute authority of rulers, by the Middle Ages, its scope expanded and began to incorporate certain legal principles. Based on the research findings, the article proposes amendments and additions to relevant articles of the Criminal Procedure Code.
