Industrial structure and structural constraints on industrial upgrading in Uzbekistan: lessons from south Korea

Annotatsiya

This study examines Uzbekistan’s industrial structure, focusing on industrial composition, technological capabilities, ownership patterns, export specialization, and financial development, while drawing comparative lessons from South Korea. The findings indicate that industrial growth remains closely linked to the energy–mining–metallurgy complex, while manufacturing is concentrated mainly in lowand medium-low-technology industries. Limited development of domestic value chains, the significant role of state-owned enterprises, constraints on long-term financing for private firms, and the evolving development of capital markets influence productivity growth and industrial diversification. Further industrial upgrading may therefore be supported by strengthening technological capabilities, enhancing private-sector competitiveness, expanding long-term financing opportunities, and promoting deeper integration into regional and global value chains.
