The image of the usurer in sadriddin ayni’s novella “The death of the usurer” and the European tradition of the satirical portrait of the miser

Annotatsiya

The article examines the image of Qori-Ishkamba, the protagonist of Sadriddin Ayni’s novella “The Death of the Usurer”, against the background of the European tradition of the satirical portrait of the miser represented by Molière’s Harpagon, Pushkin’s Covetous Knight, Balzac’s Gobseck and Gogol’s Plyushkin. Using the comparative-typological method together with the analysis of composition and narrative structure, the study identifies the features that Ayni’s image shares with the world typage of the miser (a single dominant passion, the reduction of the whole person to that passion, comic hyperbole, the self-destruction of the hero) and the features that distinguish it: the frame narration by a student-observer, the anecdotal chain of episodes rooted in the oral tradition of Bukhara, the hypocrisy of religious piety as the mask of greed, and the historical resolution of the plot, in which the hero perishes not from the internal logic of his passion but from the collapse of the social order that produced him. It is concluded that Ayni created a national variant of a transnational typage and that the novella combines the satirical portrait of the European realist tradition with the didactic and anecdotal poetics of Central Asian prose.
