The issue of gender equality in school English textbooks: an analysis of Uzbekistan based on international experience

Annotatsiya

This article analyzes the extent to which gender equality is reflected in the English-language textbooks and tasks used in grades 5–11 of general secondary schools. Drawing on recent (2024–2025) international studies – including textbook analyses from Indonesia, Colombia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as an NLP-based study covering 22 countries – the study comparatively examines the “Teens› English”, “Fly High”, “Prepare”, and “English 11” textbooks used in Uzbekistan. The analysis shows that traditional gender stereotypes persist in most textbooks worldwide, while Uzbekistani textbooks contain almost no dedicated gender-equality tasks (scoring 0/5 in grade 7 and 1–3/5 in other grades). To address this gap, a four-component (target, content, process, and outcome) integrative model for developing students› gender competence is proposed, together with practical recommendations.
