Structural and Semantic Features of Agricultural Terms in English and Uzbek

This article examines the structural and semantic features of agricultural terminology in English and Uzbek from a comparative-typological perspective. The study aims to identify term-formation patterns, component structure, semantic grouping, and degrees of interlingual equivalence within the two agricultural terminological systems. The analytical sample consists of 120 English–Uzbek term pairs representing crop production, soil science, irrigation and land reclamation, livestock, agricultural machinery, plant protection, and digital and sustainable agriculture. Structural, componential, semantic-field, comparative, and contextual methods are applied. The findings show that English makes extensive use of compounds and multiword terms, particularly N+N, Adj+N, and expanded noun phrases, whereas Uzbek actively combines simple and analytic structures with productive derivational patterns involving such formatives as -chilik, -kor, -zor, -gich and -lash/-lanish. Full equivalence is most frequent in long-established concepts, while emerging areas such as digital farming, precision technologies, and sustainability reveal greater reliance on calques, borrowings, and descriptive equivalents. The comparison also demonstrates that a single English compound may correspond to an Uzbek phrase and, conversely, an Uzbek derivative may require an English multiword unit. The results are relevant to terminology standardization, bilingual agricultural lexicography, specialized translation, and the development of domain-specific corpora.
