Annotatsiya

This article examines the pragmatic features of unreliable narration and the functions of silence, implicit meaning, and communicative ambiguity in Charlotte Brontë’s Villette. The primary aim of the study is to identify how Lucy Snowe, as the first-person narrator, shapes the reader’s perception through the selective presentation, restriction, concealment, and postponement of information. The discrepancy between the facts communicated by the narrator and her internal experiences is considered a significant characteristic of unreliable narration. The research employs pragmatic analysis, narratological interpretation, discourse analysis, and contextual analysis to explore the communicative strategies embedded in the novel. The findings demonstrate that silence in Villette should not be interpreted simply as an absence of communication; rather, it functions as an active strategy of meaning construction. By withholding crucial information, providing incomplete explanations, and presenting events through a highly subjective perspective, Lucy Snowe encourages readers to reconstruct meanings that remain implicit within the narrative. Consequently, unreliable narration becomes a complex pragmatic mechanism through which psychological depth, ambiguity, and interpretive uncertainty are created. The study argues that the interaction between silence and unreliable narration is central to Brontë’s narrative technique, as it establishes a dynamic relationship among narrator, text, and reader and encourages multiple levels of interpretation.
