Mythological Images and Motifs of Ancient Khorezm: An Archaeological and Iconographic Analysis

Annotatsiya

The article analyzes mythological images and motifs represented on works of decorative and applied art discovered at archaeological sites of ancient Khorezm, using archaeological and iconographic approaches. It examines the content and semantic significance of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, and fantastic images depicted on ceramic vessels, terracotta figurines, reliefs, and wall paintings from archaeological sites dating to the ancient period. Particular attention is paid to the mythological and semantic characteristics of the “Tree of Life” motif, fertility-related motifs, representations of deer and other animals, fantastic zoomorphic creatures, the “bull-man” image, as well as scenes associated with sacrifice and ritual practices. Based on the analysis of archaeological materials, the study demonstrates that these representations constituted visual expressions of the beliefs of the ancient population of Khorezm concerning cosmology, the renewal of nature and life, fertility, animal cults, divine forces, and ancestor worship. At the same time, the study substantiates the need to consider chronological and archaeological contexts when comparing individual mythological motifs with written sources from later periods. The findings demonstrate that in the applied art of ancient Khorezm, figurative motifs served not only decorative purposes but also functioned as an important means of expressing religious, mythological, and symbolic concepts.
