Linguistic means of evaluation in character speech and authorial narration: a study of Khaled Hosseini

This article examines the linguistic means by which evaluation is expressed in two distinct planes of narrative discourse — the speech of characters and the voice of the authorial narrator — in three novels by Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner (2003), A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007) and And the Mountains Echoed (2013). The study applies the Appraisal framework of systemic functional linguistics, supplemented by the stance model of corpus-based stylistics and by the scale of speech, writing, and thought presentation developed in corpus stylistics, to a purposively sampled set of evaluative episodes annotated manually for attitude, engagement and graduation. The results show a systematic division of evaluative labor: affect and explicit social sanction are concentrated in direct character speech, whereas the narratorial plane favors appreciation, invoked judgement and graduation, and withholds inscribed moral vocabulary. Free indirect speech and narrative report of speech acts function as the principal sites at which evaluative responsibility is transferred between the two planes, and attribution to proverbial, religious, or legal authority allows characters to present contestable judgements as shared. The article argues that Hosseini’s narrators are evaluatively reticent by design, that the reader is thereby positioned as adjudicator, and that this design generates identifiable risks in translation, including the explicitation of invoked judgement, the collapse of the dual voice in free indirect speech, the levelling of religious and legal registers, and the loss of graduation. Implications for English–Uzbek literary translation are outlined, with attention to the Uzbek evaluative morphology and evidential resources.
