Annotatsiya

This article examines the technical and typological characteristics and analysis of macro-tools from the lower paleolithic cave site of Selungur in Central Asia. The site was discovered in 1955 by A.P. Okladnikov and later partially studied by A. Poshka and M.R. Kasymov. Active discussions about the cultural and chronological affiliation of Selungur began in the 1980s after large-scale research by the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan under the leadership of U.I. Islamov. Despite the discovery of a large assemblage of stone artefacts (about 1,500 items), as well as paleoanthropological and paleontological finds, the scientific interpretation of the industry remained controversial. While V.A. Ranov, L.B. Vishnyatsky, and A.P. Derevyanko denied the presence of hand axes (bifaces) within the assaemblage, N.K. Anisutkin and U.I. Islamov justified their presence as key elements of the collection. In 2022–2023, the stone tools of Selungur were subjected to a comprehensive analysis using modern morphological, archaeometric, technical-typological, and experimental methods. As a result of the study, an typological classification (type list) was developed, confirming the genetic proximity and similarity of the Selungur industry to the cultures of the lower paleolithic of East and Southeast Asia.
