Ustyurt mesolithic: archaeology, culture, and chronology

Annotatsiya

The article examines Ustyurt`s mesolithic and early neolithic sites. The features of the location of the sites, the structure of the lithic assemblage, and the chronological periodization of regional assemblages are considered. The evidence suggest that Ustyurt`s mesolithic sites were formed under the influence of the Eastern Caspian and Southern Ural cultures, while continuing with local upper paleolithic traditions. The study focuses primarily on the typology of microliths: asymmetrical and symmetrical trapezoids, as well as bifacially retouched arrowheads, predominate, allowing for the identification of three chronological site groups (VIII-VII millennia BC, VII-VI millennia BC, VI-V millennia BC). The continuity of the region›s cultural development, reflecting the gradual transition from hunter-gatherer communities to early agricultural traditions, was noted. The study also demonstrates the seasonal adaptation of Ustyurt`s mesolithic communities and their integration into the system of Central Asian cultural contacts.
