The neolithic site of TEPAKUL-5 (middle zarafshan oasis)

Annotatsiya

The article presents the results of archaeological research conducted in 2025 at the Tepakul-5 Neolithic site located on the northern slopes of the Karatepa mountain range within the Middle Zarafshan oasis (Uzbekistan). The site is situated at the level of the third lateral terrace of the Tepakulsay and belongs to the Sazagan Neolithic culture. During excavations covering an area of 15 sq. m and a control pit with a depth of 4.4 m, four stratigraphic layers were identified, differing in lithological characteristics and concentration of archaeological material. The most intensive phase of settlement is recorded in the second layer, containing the main portion of the finds.A total of 362 archaeological objects, including stone artifacts, pottery fragments, animal bones, mollusk shells, and seed remains, have been discovered in three cultural layers. The stone industry is characterized by a flakeblade type with a high proportion of microblades and the predominance of chisel-like tools. The presence of a single geometric microlith was noted, which is a rare phenomenon for the sites of the Sazagan culture. Analysis of the raw materials indicates the predominant use of flint.The obtained materials confirm the site's affiliation with the Mesolithic-Neolithic communities of the mountainous and foothill regions of Central Asia and refine our understanding of the specifics of their economic activities and adaptation to terraced landscapes
