Loss on ignition (LOI) of cement, raw materials and raw mixes in cement industry is specified as the weight loss at 900~1000 oC and 15~30 minutes in the standards of each region (GOST, ISO, ASTM, JIS, KS) in the world, and the clinker yield produced from the raw mixes feeding to the kiln process is generally derived from the LOI. The kiln conditions are significantly different from those specified in the standards, because the material temperature is up to 1450 oC and the residence time is about 15 minutes above 1000 oC in the kiln burning process. In order to derive a more accurate clinker yield from raw mixes, the LOIs of raw materials and raw mixes used in the cement plant were measured to confirm the additional LOIs at 950 oC up to 1450 oC with ignition duration up to 1 hour, in which the additional LOIs of 1~2.5% are found. The condition in the standards to measure the LOI is inappropriate to apply for the derivation of clinker yield from the raw mixes feeding into the kiln process. The appropriate LOI test condition to obtain the accurate clinker yield is the temperature of about 1450 oC for 15 minutes, similar to the actual kiln operating condition. The accurate clinker yield will ensure the effective production inventory management in the cement plant.
