This study examines the association of vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms—rs2228570 (FokI, T>C) and rs1544410 (BsmI, G>A)—with sport-specific physical performance characteristics in 652 elite athletes representing different types of sports. Genotyping was performed using real-time PCR with allele-specific fluorescent probes. The T allele of rs2228570 was more frequently observed in athletes engaged in endurance-oriented disciplines and was associated with indicators of aerobic metabolism. In contrast, the G allele of rs1544410 was more prevalent in athletes participating in speed- and power-oriented sports, suggesting a relationship with high-intensity and technically demanding activities. The results indicate that VDR gene polymorphisms may contribute to interindividual differences in physical performance andean be considered as auxiliary genetic markers for sport-specific (raining optimization and athlete profiling.
